Thousands of people defied a police ban to stage a candlelit vigil in Hong Kong, marking the 31st anniversary of China's crackdown in Tiananmen Square. (Subscribe:

It's the first time the annual vigil has been banned - ostensibly due to coronavirus restrictions.

But earlier - politicians approved a controversial measure making it illegal to insult China's national anthem - amid moves by Beijing to draw up a new security law for Hong Kong which has already brought protestors out onto the streets.
