Hours after unemployment benefits for tens of millions of Americans lapsed, administration officials arrived on Capitol Hill on Saturday morning for a rare meeting with top congressional Democrats to discuss a coronavirus relief package and work to break an impasse over new aid as the American economy continues to shudder. Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, who hosted the meeting with Senator Chuck Schumer of New York in her Capitol Hill suite, met with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to discuss the second stimulus package. Going into the meeting both sides were hoping to make progress soon agreeing on the next stimulus package. Heading into the meeting Mark Meadows said, “we’re just hopeful that they’re willing to really negotiate today, and if they are we’re prepared to make a deal on behalf of the American people, and Mnuchin, who said it is “Just another working day at the Capitol.”

After the meeting reports were very positive and a lot of progress was made. Emerging from their three-hour meeting (which was the longest meeting held over the last six days) they said that they had the most productive discussion yet, although they had not yet struck a deal. Among the largest sticking points in the discussion is a $600 weekly federal jobless benefit that had expired at midnight as officials in Washington failed to agree on a new relief bill. Mnuchin explained how they all agreed on education as well. He said, “I would just say that the four of us also agree the education issue is something that's very timely. Schools are opening and there are schools that want to open that will need more money for social distancing up, so schools are also another important factor. Chuck Schumer said, “It was the best discussion we’ve had so far, and I’d call it progress but a ways to go.” He explained how at least now each side knows where they're at.” He said aides would be meeting again on Sunday to go over details and the principals would meet again Monday. On top of this, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin added that the meeting was the "most productive we've had to date however theres still a lot of open issues and they are trying to narrow down things they don’t agree on”
